The USB-C connectors are a new technology, and they have a way to negotiate how much power the device need to draw from the outlet, but that only works when the connection is made USB-C to USB-C.

The regular USB-A can’t negotiate the proper current that it needs, so it has to emulate. The application checks the connectivity of a regular USB-C to USB-A cable and tells the user if it’s OK to use it.

CheckR is a very specific app that only works with Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, and Pixel C, so if you have anything else don’t bother trying it out.
