aliceandbob.io Desktop App

1.0.0 Beta 2

Encrypt and decrypt messages with public and private PGP keys by relying on this open-source, modern-looking and Electron-based PGP tool

Privacy and security - two of the most talked-about concepts and concerns for literally everyone in today's tech-crazed world. And, of course, you can't talk about privacy and security without encryption.
If trusting chat apps or mail services is becoming somewhat of a problem for you, then why not remove the "intermediary"?
Enter aliceandbob.io Desktop App (we know it's a mouthful, but read on), a free, open-source, and very user-friendly PGP tool.

What is a PGP tool and what does this app do?

PGP stands for Pretty Good Privacy and it is an encryption protocol used for sending encrypted emails. And that's exactly what this app is all about: helping you encrypt and decrypt messages effortlessly.
Here's what you need to know: aliceandbob.io Desktop App is built with Electron and is basically brings the aliceandbob.io web app to your desktop.
It's based on OpenPGP.js and it allows you to generate your own PGP key pairs, encrypt messages with a public PGP key and decrypt messages with your own private key. Simple!

A basic walkthrough of the app

Before anything else, you should also know that the public keys are currently generated using two parameters: your email address, and a custom passphrase of your choosing.
Once your keys are created, you can encrypt messages with the public PGP key of the receiver. Enter the text to encrypt in the designated section, and the Public PGP key of the receiver in the section below it.
To encrypt messages, simply enter your private key and your passphrase, and that's pretty much it for now.

Things to look forward to

It's worth noting that the app is still a very young project, therefore, one should expect more options and features in the future.
Some announced upcoming features include the ability to choose the type of encryption for your key pairs, to export the keys to .pgp format, to upload your own public keys to HKP servers, as well as store the public keys of your contacts and options for retrieving said contacts a lot easier (as the app doesn't feature any email service integration).

Conclusion

It seems that more and more of today's security and privacy-related issues have more to do with trust than with the actual technology involved.
Therefore, aliceandbob.io Desktop App is a pretty solid option for users who want a simple and efficient way of encrypting their emails and messages. It's modern, easy-to-use, and open-source, meaning you can check out the code yourself to see exactly what's what.
