nnn is a lightweight utility designed to work as a full-features terminal file manager, but also as disk usage analyzer, file picker, batch renamer and app launcher. While the app is not specifically designed for Windows, you should bear in mind that it can run on Linux, Raspberry Pi, Termux and Cygwin subsystem of the aforementioned operating system.
Considering that it relies on subsystems of Windows, the installation entails you use a curse library with wide character support, standard libc and libreadline. Installing it from the source package – as available on Windows, entails installing the dependencies and then compiling them. The PREFIX function is also available in case you want to install it to a different location.
The tool comes in three modes, namely detail – which is also the default – disk usage analyzer and file picker. As a file manager, it ensures smooth navigation and packs four contexts or workspaces, bookmarks that enable pinning and visiting folders, order pure numeric name sorting as well as case-sensitive version sort.
The query option permits instant filtering with search-as-you-type, subtree search which allows you to open and edit files as well as substring and regex matching. Not only does it provide detailed file information, but also offers the possibility to open all text files in your default editor.
