Auto Dark Mode

3.0.1

Switch between the dark and white Windows 10 themes automatically, on a user-defined schedule, with this simple, open-source application

With the release of the Anniversary Update, Microsoft has introduced a dark mode for Windows 10 menus and certain applications. However, it is not possible to switch between the dark and white color themes automatically based on the time of day.
Auto Dark Mode is an open-source application that provides you with a solution. It can enable the dark and standard color themes automatically on a specified schedule while running in the background.

Take advantage of the Windows 10 dark mode

Now, the dark mode added by Microsoft isn’t all-inclusive, as it only affects Windows menus, the File Explorer and some UWP apps. However, if your other applications already have dark themes, it is certainly a nice addition.
Unfortunately, though, there is no quick way to switch between the two color modes or set up a schedule. The setting is rather difficult to access, so making the change manually is less than ideal.

Switch between color modes at specific times

Once you have installed the application, you can select the preferred color mode from a simple menu, as well as specify when each of them should be enabled automatically. Then, you can just click Apply and close the window.
A task is created in the task scheduler, which will launch the application with the required arguments at the right time. Nothing needs to run in the background.

Useful application for Dark Mode users

It has to be said that the user interface isn’t particularly impressive, but you won’t have to look at it for very long. It would have been great if the schedule could be adapted based on local sunrise and sunset times, but this feature will hopefully be added in the future.
On the whole, Auto Dark Mode does its job well and without using up any system resources. It can switch between the two Windows color themes at specific times automatically, a feature that is not available by default.
