Did it happen that the system blocked access not only to suspicious, malicious sites, but also to popular social services (such as, for example, VKontakte or Facebook), official sites of well-known companies, and even resources of antivirus software manufacturers? The situation is really not pleasant. And most often the reason lies in the incorrect changes made to the hosts file.

What is this file and what is it intended for?

If we leave aside the complex IT terminology, we can say that the hosts file is a text document that contains information about the IP of various computers. It is thanks to this file that your system transforms the literal name of the site (for example, vk.com) into a numeric combination necessary to search for information and display it.

How can this file be used? There are several main tasks for which it is needed.

The first is, of course, blocking unwanted sites. Who may need it? Parents who do not want their children to gain access to information that is dangerous for them or sites marked “18+”. For owners of companies that oppose their employees during social hours. In order to accomplish this, you must enter the following line:

127.0.0.1 adress.host (IP-address of the computer and the address of an unwanted resource). Due to this, the request for the site will remain inside the computer and will not be released in DNS, that is, the user will receive a message in the browser that the page cannot be displayed.

If the sites, access to which is necessary to block, there are not several tens or hundreds, but thousands and millions, you can use special free programs from the Internet. For example, you will be able to block once all the sites that the search engine finds on request "porn".

Another option to use this file is to get quick access to certain pages. How does it work? For example, you enter a line in the hosts file

209.85.229.147 g # google.com

Due to this, it is enough to enter only the letter g in the address bar of the browser so that the computer gets access to IP 209.85.229.147 and opens the main page of the search engine.

Incorrect file entries can cause browser malfunction and numerous error messages. What to do if you have made many changes to the file and do not know which of them interferes with the correct functioning of the programs?

To do this, simply download or re-create the original hosts file. It is necessary to register only one line: 127.0.0.1 localhost. For this fit a regular notebook. The finished file must be saved without the .txt extension in the same folder.

Never believe scammers who say that you can only restore a hosts file for a fee, offer to send SMS to suspicious numbers, transfer money to an account (electronic or bank). This is the simplest operation that even an inexperienced PC user is able to handle.

Where is the hosts file in Windows 7 and other operating system versions?

Most often, you need to look for it in the Windows system files folder

 Windows / System32 / drivers / etc / hosts.

Good luck, and let your hosts always be in perfect order!
